Groups - Getting Started

Here's some things you should know before setting up your group on SailingSmarter.
You have many options when setting up your group with us, and we'll try to steer you through them.
- You can start out by clicking on "create a group" on the menu on the right hand side of the screen.
- You'll come to a screen with many fields and options:
- Name: The name of your group. (note, the name of your group will be used in determining your web address. i.e. sailingsmarter.com/groups/your-groups-name-here) Keep reading to find out if this is flexible or not.
- Description: This should be a one sentence description of your group. This is used in our group directory.
- Category: Select the one which best describes your group. This is useful for people searching for your group! You can select multiple categories by using your control button while clicking
- Group Image: This image will appear on the header of your group home page. Pick something representative of your group, whether it is a photo of all of the members, a logo, or an action shot. Browse for the photo, and click on upload.
- Group Description: This is the description which will appear next to the image in the header of your group home page. This should be an overview paragraph of your group, and paint a good picture of who your group is.
- Membership requests: How selective is your group?
- Anyone can join open groups - no approval necessary.
- The creator of the group (or the administrator of the group) must approve membership in a moderated group, but anyone can attempt to join.
- Users can only join if invited by the group administrator/creator.
- Closed - not recommended for most - Administrators have full power over the membership.
- Registration form: If checked, users will have an option to join your group on registration. We don't recomment this for most groups, as we find groups tend to remain fairly small.
- List in directory: self explanatory - If listed your group will be much easier to find and join.
- Private - Non-members will not be able to view this group at all. In order to access the home-page, a user must be a member. Not recommended for most groups.
- That's pretty much it. Just click on "submit" and your group will be formed.
