This is the Website for the 2009 Lightning North Americans. The regatta will be hosted by Sodus Bay Yacht Club from August 4th through August 14th. Sodus Point is a sailors venue. The village is small, but lively. The Yacht Club over looks the harbor of Sodus Bay, which opens into Lake Ontario. There are several restaurants and bars eager to cater to summer vacationers. Everyone is familiar with sailors, since the yacht club is a regular host of major regional regattas. Racing will take place on Lake Ontario, the smallest great lake. While it is the smallest, it still measures 210 miles by 60 miles. August breezes are generally a moderate thermal from the north-east, with periods of heavy air every several days as a front passes through. Since the lake is relatively large a good chop will develop on days with more than a moderate breeze. The regatta is currently in the planning stages. We will continue to post all the developments here, as they occur.

So you want to bring some people who aren't sailing and you want to know what there is for them to do. There are some great activites right in Sodus Point. Sodus Point Beach is a long sand beach, sandwiched between two lighthouses. The county provides lifeguards and a new bathhouse. For the fisherman in the group Sodus Point is the home of a large fleet of charter fishing boats. August is the best time to fish in Lake Ontario, as the smallmouth bass, brown trout and King Salmon are all biting well. For those of you who are willing to travel a bit more there are several interesting possibilities. Niagara Falls is about a two hour drive to the West and the Adorondak Mountains are 2-3 hours East.
